One of the best and most effective ways to naturally treat anxiety is through meditation. If you’re not familiar with meditation, it is a simple yet focused process of quieting the mind using a variety of techniques. Studies have continued to show the positive effects not only in terms of reducing anxiety symptoms but also in reducing cortisol levels and improving overall happiness and well being.
Techniques
In terms meditation techniques, there are many. However, the best way to get started is to follow these simple steps
1) Find a place that is quiet and where you won’t be bothered.
2) Set a timer for 15-20 minutes
3)Sit still and focus intently on your breathing.
* After a moment, you’ll find your mind wanders to various thoughts. This is completely normal and happens to everyone. Rather than getting frustrated, simply bless the thoughts and invite yourself to focus back on your breathing. Notice the sensation of air moving through your mouth and nostrils. Notice how your belly moves in and out. Notice how easy and natural it is to breathe. Observation over judgement is key.
4) When you practice this art of continually keeping your focus on your breath, within 5-10 minutes your thoughts will become less frequent and it becomes easier to stay present. The longer you keep this focus, the easier it gets.
Practice this everyday, preferably in the morning before you start your day. When you practice this meditation you’ll find you have more control over your thinking and anxious thoughts tend to come up less.
