Understanding Depression and Anxiety
Depression and anxiety can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or life circumstances. According to Centre for
Addiction and Mental Health, these conditions influence how individuals think, feel, and behave—and they often overlap in ways
that can make them difficult to recognize.
Common Symptoms of Depression
Depression is more than just feeling sad. It can present as:
- Persistent low mood or emptiness
- Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
- Fatigue or low energy, even after rest
- Changes in sleep patterns (too much or too little)
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
Some people with depression may still go about their daily routines—working, socializing, and meeting responsibilities—while
internally struggling. This can make symptoms easy to overlook, both for the individual and those around them.
Common Symptoms of Anxiety
Anxiety often shows up differently. It may include:
- Constant worry or racing thoughts
- Feeling on edge or unable to relax
- Irritability or restlessness
- Physical symptoms like a rapid heartbeat, sweating, or tension
- Difficulty sleeping due to overthinking
- Avoidance of certain situations or responsibilities
Like depression, anxiety can become part of your "normal,” making it harder to recognize that support could help.
